“On my honor,

I will do my best to do my duty.

To God and my Country.

To help other people.

And to obey the laws of the pack.”

When my brother was finally at the age he could commence his scouting life, my father and his friend, the owner of a local daycare, worked with our parochial school to start Troop 92. My parents were both fully committed to scouting life with my dad as Scout Master and my mother as a Den Mother. They did this until my brother became an Eagle scout.

Mom had zero interest in being a Girl Scout mom. So for ten years, I went to every single meeting, camp-out, march, hike, fishing tourney, service obligation, pinewood derby, cookout…

When I was finally a teenager, mom now troop mom, recruited me to be spare hands on deck. I didn’t mind; I loved being included instead of sat aside to read scouting manuals and color. What nobody realized at the time, or at least I think they didn’t realize, was that while all the boys worked on their merit badges, I was learning right alongside them. I used every chance I had to put those skills to use.

As far as I’m concerned, I should be an honorary boy scout. My family will survive the impending Apocalypse thanks to Scouting.

I should contact the council about getting a sash with my merit badge. I’ll tie a squayself a sash with all the merit badges I rightfully earned.
