Among the many things I tried my hand at during quarantine, was figuring out how to spell words in crochet using the bobble stich. All you need is gridded paper and maybe a little simple math and you can create your own washcloths or panels for making a blanket. These are some of the ones I made.
To design a cloth
Download the template below and fill the squares in to spell out our word or draw a picture. Each box represents a single crochet stitch. When you are filling in the gridded paper, each block you fill in with be your bobble stitch. Make sure there’s a space between each bobble.
Every odd numbered row will be a straight line of single crochet. If you’re on row 17 and creating bobbles, you messed up!
You’re going to have to do some math to figure out how many rows of SC the top and bottom of the wash cloth should be, plus how many stitches to the first letter and past he last one you will sc. Your first row of bobbles should always be on an even numbered row, the odd rows will be the sc across.
Example: The grey WTF Cloth has two sc on either side of the bobbles in the top row, and it’s 28 SC across, total.
How to:
Start with a chain of your total number of chains + ONE, sc in the first ch from the hook and across the remaining stitches. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2-5: SC across, ch1 at end of row, turn.
Row 6: look at your diagram and single crochet across until you reach the first shaded box Create a bobble in this stitch, sc in the next stitch, bobble in the next. sc in your blank spaces, bobble in the dark spaces.
What you need:
4mm hook – I use Clover Amour. Pricey but worth it, Link goes to Amazon.
Cotton yarn in your choice of colors (I like Bernat’s Handicraft)
A template with your word (Click this link to download a 30×30 square template)
How to do the bobble stitch:
1. Yarn Over (YO), insert hook in next stitch, YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through two loops.
2. (YO, insert hook in same stitch, YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through two loops) two times
3. YO, and draw through all loops on hook.
