Cake is an interesting band. Their music is not hard, not soft, not fast or slow. Their music is its own thing. I was stoked about them playing Firefly in 2012 since I’d never seen them and now I was going to get to photograph them too.
They were so boring live I couldn’t stand it. Part of me thinks this guy does it on purpose. For one whole song, he stood behind a ficus plant. A big one. Impossible to photograph. Then, he gives the ficus away…in a festival…to a bunch of kids who are thrilled to death they got something from their favorite band, but now have to carry a living tree all over a festival.
This was the only picture I felt like taking. This is about the level of quality the guy puts into his performance. He didn’t need me to be at my best either. haha
And I say all this with 100% certainty because I had the chance to see them AGAIN at the Palace Theater in Waterbury and guess what happened?
ANOTHER FUCKING FICUS and this time he stood behind it for the entire opening set. No pictures, boring as fuck. I left that show after my shoot.
And still, I love them.
