Here are a few photos from the Cathedral of Junk in Austin. It’s a little out of the way and may seem a little creepy just showing up at someone’s house in a neighborhood, but it’s definitely a CAN’T MISS spot.
A trash-as-art installation carefully assembled to be walked through, climbed on and gawked at. It is in a residential neighborhood, but the neighbors are used to having visitors around. The artist is a bit eccentric and very nice. There’s no cost of admission and you’ll have to call ahead to make sure he’s home, otherwise you can’t go in. I feel bad that he gets harassed by the city every so often to get it taken down, but he’s been able to beat the system each time. Nothing fancy, no frills, no mansions. Just junk – and yet, it’s so much more than that.
