Not sure why It’s taken way too long to get to this point, but I finally figured out how to stream video games like the cool kids do. Please hold your applause.
The main reason I did it was for mini mini-me. She really wants to stream Roblox & Minecraft. I’m not too keen on her being a part of the online gaming world, as I know how complicated that world can get. I’m pretty sure she could throw down some smack and I’m doing my best to educate her as a responsible tech person so we can navigate theses waters safely. Still, she’s only 8. Then again….
HOWEVER, if she’s good at her games(or even if she sucks, who cares?), and she’s engaging and not being a total turd, AND IF SHE CAN MAKE MONEY AT IT, then mayyyyybe……
Buuut as it turns out, I’m having WAY TOO MUCH FUN.
The Setup
is the complete opposite of gaming elite. This is an ’81 Gremlin that still runs and is held together with duct tape. I have an AIO Lenovo with too little memory for my preference…and a very small area of desk space for much else.
I started with a soundcard and mic, that I originally intended to use for podcasting with a cohort. Then the cohort in question flaked out on me and I gave up on the idea altogether.
A better friend told me about his gaming setup earlier this year, which sparked the curiosity button once again. After some research and reviews on Amazon, I finally settled on this cheap but well-liked USB2.0 dongle.
I was very surprised by the quality of this adapter. When not streaming, Mario Kart, for example, looks gorgeous on my screen at 1080p/60fps. It’s supposed to support 4k but we are not fancy people.
When streaming, the quality dropped to 720p/30fps which is still good, but not that very robust 1080p/60fps I was getting offline. I was also starting to experience some lag time, which is unacceptable if you’re racing or about to kick some enemy ass. Frustrated, I reluctantly bought another card, my second choice had the dongle not panned out. Spent a little more, but still way less than Elgato. This one is USB3.0 and also boasts1080p quality when streaming.
The first run, I got 240p. It felt like my soul escaped me. Digging deeper into the Gamecaster settings, I found the magic spot, reboot my machine and fired things up and…..
Now what?
Will my progeny get her chance to stream Roblox and Minecraft? Possibly. Until then, mom has a fat roll of quarters with her name on them.
