The first time I heard of Marilyn Manson was from one of my assistant managers at the record store I worked at in high school. She was very goth/emo when those words actually meant that. Her hair was black and purple as was her wardrobe. She never, ever wore anything but black and purple. It sounded like a whole other world to me: it was sexual, raw, almost evil. Then one glorious night in 1991 or 92, Nine Inch Nails came to Club Nu (one of many times they performed there) and Manson was the opening band. Imagine my surprise to see my half naked assistant manager on all fours, attached to a dog collar and leash on the stage doing things I never thought I’d ever see 4 feet from my face. Quite memorable.
